More Information:
Two phytoactive compounds with proven antibacterial properties.
For centuries honey has been used as a food and prized as medicine by many cultures from around the
world. Only recently has the effectiveness of honey for its medical use been linked to its potent
antibacterial properties. Researchers in Australia have investigated the therapeutic properties and
benefits of Leptospermum honey and have proved that some Leptospermum honeys are very effective at
inhibiting the growth of many disease forming bacteria and fungi.
Some Leptospermum honeys contain two types of antimicrobial activity. The first is due to an enzyme
glucose oxidase , which is activated on dilution to release Hydrogen Peroxide.
This slow release of Hydrogen Peroxide acts as an powerful antiseptic without damaging sensitive
tissues at the wound site.
The second and additional property which makes Leptospermum honey doubly potent is a unique
phytochemical compound recently identified as methylgloxal. This unique phytoactive plant property
has also been proven reliable in its ability to inhibit or kill many micro-organisms.
There is evidence to suggest that the two antibacterial components together may have a synergistic
action.
Leptospermum Honey has been tested against up to 80 different pathogenic and disease causing
organisms including the modern antibacterial resistant 'superbug', Golden Staph.
